What if Langford beat Johnson and took his title? Well, no one would care. White American hated Johnson. Johnson with the golden smile. Johnson with the white wife. That is what puts people in the seats. if I was Tex Rickard I would tell Langford and his team no thanks. No money no fight.

- - Sam was most likely the bigger ticket seller because he was a fighter and a small guy knocking out heavies. JJ sailed to England and had to borrow $$$ he never repaid to sail to Australia.
Sam did all this on his own, and moreover stayed in Australia to fight on because of that massive popularity. Don't want to say JJ was booed out of Oz, but the people anywhere don't like people much less fighters putting on "airs" as JJ did along with his stink the ring fights.

People not liking Jack is making my point. Yes, everybody hated Johnson which means they will buy a ticket to see him get his ass kicked. Back in the 1910's a black man driving a new car and showing off his white wife made many white people to lose their mind. Tex Rickard had $$ in his eyes when saw Jack.

Come on man - you sound like the guys on this forum, locked in a boxing fan bubble; looking at the game through the prism of a fight fan.
You think great boxing/fighting would out draw hatred and the HW championship?
JJ was hated, first because of racial bigotry and then because he turned into a sham. But either way, he, for all the wrong reasons, would still out sell venues that WW/MW Langford couldn't. (IMO).
Interesting "What if" history: Let's say Langford or Jeannette takes out Johnson just around the time Johnson stops Flynn, i.e. before the Mann Act charge goes down, but still after the State by State black listing JJ suffered.
What does the white public do?
Sam and Joe were less 'in your face guys' so would have they treated them differently?
Would they have been allowed to defend? (In the States.)
Would they have been allowed to fight each other for the title?
Would they have been allowed to rematch Johnson?
Would they been driven out of the country?
Would they have gone overseas to defend in Europe just because they were so popular there?
WARNING next ones will likely offend JJ supporters:
Would the different, possibly postive, taste Sam or Joe would left in the mouth of white fans have opened the door for a Wills-Dempsey fight?
Would there have been a black HW Champion before Louis?

- - Did Tex ever promote a JJ fight as the headliner other than Jeffries's fight?
Don't think so, and it was Jack London's magnificent inflammatory that hyped up that fight not that London got or needed a cut for that fight.

Tex Rickard actually co-produced the Reno fight. His "in" was that JJ trusted him.
The other promoter has slipped from history, (I am embarrassed to say from my mind too) but if you read the contemporary accounts the other promoter's name pops up. Boxrec doesn't recognize him either.
But the way I remember it, Rickard needed financial backing; he didn't have the necessary up front money. It was early on for Rickard.
Of course JJ would only consider (trust) Rickard as referee.
P.S. There was a back up referee ready to go, Charley White. The only other white refreee JJ would trust (approve) at the time.
P.S.S. Jack Welch was another white referee that had a good reputation with black fighters. He got the Willard fight.

Good post buddy.
The co-promoter was John Gleason of San Francisco.
