He was certainly a great middleweight, that was where he was at his very best. He did fight a number of third rate contenders but he defeated them all in the manner to be expected of a great fighter (he didn't squeak past them in close decisions) and when he fnally got the chance to face the best in the division (Trinidad, Holmes, Joppy) he convincingly defeated them too. Hopkins was the best middleweight from around 1995 to 2005. I think if you are the best middleweight of your era, and especially if that stretches to 10 years, then you have to be considered a great middleweight.

If the division is deep, there is never a champ that has longevity.

Hopkins
All benefitted from weaker divisions..
Look at the best eras in boxing
Fab Four
70s heavies
90s heavies
Early 2000s 122-135 (morales, Barrera, manny) (Castillo, casamoyer, corrales, freitas)
All those great fighters but no long term champs

Im not so fast to say when Bhop was at his best ,i would say late 30s early 40s was his best period.

One problem with Hopkins and Winky Wright also (for that matter) is that they fought across weight divisions. This makes it hard to categorize them according to weight class. It can be said that Hopkins did not go after low hanging fruit though. Joppy got sloppy pretty quick but was still considered a challenge when he fought Hopkins.
Hopkins suffers from weight class drift primarily because he fought great competition in all divisions. His record at light heavy is much better than Jones unless I am mistaken.Last edited by billeau2; 03-06-2017, 03:16 PM.

Most consider Bernard a top ten competitor at 160, I don't!
His best win is against Johnson who was an undefeated fighter but his record then was filled with nobodies!
Bernard has talent and he has an uncanny way of dissecting his opponents but that doesn't make him a GREAT fighter. He holds a record of successive wins against who?
Do you consider Oscar and Trinidad real middleweights?
John David? He barely got by Reggie Johnson and who did John David every beat?
Yes these guys were pretty decent but they weren't the maniacs that Hagler had to fight! Sleep well before you see Antuofermo or Hamsho across the ring for 15 rounds. Your concerned the stool might be brought in after they push the ref out of the ring hahahaha...........Hopkins didn't face those animals or anything near what was given to Marvin.
He only had 15 bouts at 175 but he fought better opponents and he won some and lost a few.
Bernard's skill set to me is the play it safe and out last the guy similar to his longevity stint. I can appreciate his moxy but there's nothing exciting or suspenseful about his appearances.
I doubt he's in my top twenty at 160, theres many more middleweights that have more appeal than he has.
