He made some phony records fighting mandatories, I believe. To me he is not an ATG. And If he does not do well--as you say--against a group of guys, most of whom are not ATGs, is he really an ATG himself? I think his resume of people he beat is weak. His supposed greatness results mostly from phony records over B fighters, mandatories, etc. People love records and take them all seriously.
Hopkins was not a cherry picker by any means but he was an opportunist. When you consider the divisions he was in for a lot of competition at welter and middle but he really excelled when he got to light heavy which is not quite as competitive a division.

He's probably a guy who could be good competition in any era. I kind of look at the Jones fight as very telling. He did a decent job but he obviously was not the level of Jones as a natural talent at least.

The competition he beat at middleweight is not very impressive.

Williams was oft noted for lacking punching power, its kind of the big mark brought up against him. The only film Ive ever seen of him was very short but hes going to work throwing some good/fast combos, and then later working his way out..

A number of post fight accounts Ive read of his usually involve him working his jab, and having slick defense. A good amount of them have him being successful on the inside too.

The opposite of a nuthugger is the hater: Someone who has so much antipathy for fighter that they have to make threads specifically tailored to denigrate the fighter in question.
