But the next season Yahoo decided to make upgrades so that it won't work on my phone now and I'm not getting a new phone till the wheels fall off on this one.

You have to go into the chat for the league and click on the "info" circle in the top right corner. Then turn notifications to "off".

If you go into the settings on the main page of the app (without going into the chat) you'll turn off notifications for the entire app (trade alerts, etc.)
