Ventilating is the act of breathing in oxygen and breathing out co2. You cant do that when you've and they've given you a muscle relaxant and knocked out.
A tube will be put down your throat to maintain your airway and you'll be hooked up to the machine.
The machines enable folks manage the partial pressure of oxygen which means the amount of o2 reaching systemic circulation. And the co2. If it is too low our blood is too alkaline and If it's too high it's too acidic. They can an estimate of the amount of haemoglobin saturated with oxygen which is what the news talks about when they mention oxygen saturation with a pulse oximeter. That little peg you see on peoples fingers. They can operate it by positive and negative pressure.
They'll probably roll you onto your front which can improve oxygenation.
They do it to buy time to see if you can fight off the infection. See if they can get all the gases into normal ranges. They'll put an arterial line so they can sample these gases. And these gases will indicate if the body is doing anything to get back to normal.
The ventilators are for people that will die without it.
