    School Suspensions: Yes or No?

After seeing the news story about the 6 year old girl who was zip-tied, arrested and put into a patrol car for hitting another student in school, I'm wondering how effective it would be to have suspended her, rather than call the police. The cop in question was fired for violating policy (kids under 12 should not be arrested), but because of frivolous lawsuits and scumbag attorneys, schools have to protect themselves and educators have their hands tied when it comes to discipline.

But does suspension really work? Some see it as a reward for the kid to be sent home from school, while others see it as a burden to parents, particularly single parents who have to miss work and face financial hardship to stay home with their unruly child. What's the answer for problem kids since schools have little authority over them and many parents don't discipline their kids at home?

So you think it was ok for the officer to zip tie a 6 year old?
Seems excessive. Kids fight all the time.
I think in school suspensions would work. Being stuck in a class all day and eating in the class away from friends seems more like a fitting punishment than spending time at home

if sending the kid home is a burden to the parents especially if they're a single parent cause now they will have to miss work, etc. well then what's the benefit of sending the kid to jail? wouldnt that just cause the parents to even take more time away from work?

She hit employee's which 'IF that kind of behavior is not stopped at a early age? Can lead to other things later in life' But having fights with other kids 'That is just apart of school life and in some ways learning'.

Note: Maybe the police should of just come in to speak to the kid, and explained why she should not be hitting teachers 'No need for handcuffs etc'

Speaking from experience, in school suspension works better than sending a kid home for a few days.

this right here... although when i was still going to school i've never heard of in school suspension lol.. but i do think this is a better solution. make the damm kid go to school but put him in a detention class where he'll have to do school work. sending the kid home is a award especially if you dont have strict parents you dont have to worry about getting your azz whooped so the kid will prolly be playing video games all day.

Where are you getting that from? No I don't think she should have been zip tied, not at all. The cop was fired and rightfully so.

In school suspension or detention isn't much of a deterrent for some kids. Especially if they know the teachers have little to no authority over them outside of a verbal reprimand. I personally think putting the burden back on the parents and sending them home is a better idea. Let the parents deal with them and eliminate the distraction from the classroom.

                That all depends.

When I got it, I was at that ****** school I got bussed to.

The guy running it wasnt even a teacher, or at least he didn't teach any classes. He just ran OCSC (On Campus School Suspension)

He was a street guy. The room was full of posters about the barrio, etc. He was a rough one too. One kid made him mad and he told that kid he'd beat his ass, and if his dad didn't like it he could come up there and get his ass beat too.

I know I never went back, and the guy never even said a word to me except to tell me which desk to sit in and to be quiet.

While I'm sure some knuckleheads went in over and over, you'd hear alot of the kids there, including the ****** kids, saying they were never going back to OCSC with that crazy mean dude in there.

Nowadays I'm sure guys like that dont exist, and if true in school suspensions may not have the same effect it used to.

Oh alright. The "officer in question was fired.....scumbag teachers and school to protect itself" line kind of threw me off.
Idk usually the problems start at home because of abuse or lack of attention. But yeah its a tough situation

Suspension is something I have thought about a lot! I have mixed feelings about it. Most kids who are suspended have no family support anyway. Also, if the kid does have support, what about his family and their employment situation?

It really comes down to how we want to view the family. We live in a society that tears families apart... Then we ask for parents that will take responsability for their kids in school. Some families are made up of people who live in bad areas, and who are treated like victims, and naturally many of these individuals do not parent very well.

These kids of course affect the other kids and the classroom. As a society we have to ask: what is education for? And what is the role of the family in educating their kids? and in teaching their kids how to behave? Ultimately either the kid, or the class loses out.
