Moments after a hunter shot a deer in Arkansas, the animal got up and attacked him in a tragic twist of fate, according to wildlife officials.
Thomas Alexander, 66, shot the deer with a muzzleloader in Yellville, about 102 miles east of Fayetteville, on Tuesday, KY3 reported.
He then approached the deer to check if he had killed it, according to Keith Stephens, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
"I don’t know how long he left it there, but he went up to check it to make sure it was dead. And evidently, it wasn’t," said Stephens. "I’ve worked for the Game and Fish Commission for 20 years, and it’s one of the stranger things that’s happened."
Alexander was hunting by himself but managed to call his wife, who dialed 911 for help. Paramedics transported him to Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, where he was pronounced dead.
