I know what it means to me but you sound like you're just bursting to tell me what it means to you. Go ahead.
      its a reverse psychology programming.

superficially, like carpenter said, its about greed, yuppie culture, capitalism is bad etc....

but in reality, its telling people you are a sucker if you have a family and a job. You're a square if you live a responsible normal life being tied down to a wife, children, and a career.

      its promoting chaos.........

then there's the most interesting part of the movie which neither me or you have yet to discuss/cover:

the alien/lizard people who are behind all of it and you need these special glasses to see them......

arent you surprised we havent talked about it yet?

do you know what that's about?

hollywood loves to make movies like this where there is some lesson or meaning behind it that people are suppose to see but in reality there's another hidden meaning to it. hollywood loves to make movies where there is an obvious bad guy and obvious good guys, but in reality, the bad guy is actually the good guy and the good guys are the bad ones.

      perfect example:

      have you seen this movie?

Lakeview Terrance - never seeni it, but I'll give it a watch. I find your thoughts interesting even where I don't necessarily agree.

Tell you what you remind me a great deal of my dad - or at least the way he would talk about the media. Analysing down to the minutiae the purpose and meaning behind news stories or movies even down to explaining the specific techniques used. Of course, to him everything was 'capitalist propaganda' from movies to soap operas and most especially the news.

In my case my main issue is not that I'm blind the the possibility of deeper meaning in narrative media as much as I got the awareness that any deeper meaning we impose on things - past a certain point - becomes simply a reflection of our own pre-existing narratives and belief systems. In short we all see what we want to see. In fact beyond that we even tend to seek out information that tends to affirm our beliefs and overlook or ignore those sources that don't.

See I could just as easily flip your script and say They Live is actually a subversive message warning the 'hardworking decent people' you describe that if they don't open their eyes (or take off their rose-tinted spectacles if you enjoy an apposite metaphor) and fight to preserve their rights and freedoms then they could lose everything. Can that reading be demonstrated to be any less objectively real or appropriate than yours?

I try to keep things simple and fairly rigorously grounded in demonstrable facts and backed by evidence rather than speculation not because I lack the capacity to see deeper (quite the contrary in fact) but because I fundamentally distrust my tendency to do so - possibly a consequence of going too far down some rabbit holes of my own in my younger days.

At something of a tangent did you ever see the movie Bob Roberts?

Be curious to hear what your lens made of it.

EDIT: Oh yeah the aliens in They Live I always kinda considered a metaphor for the lack of basic humanity - traits like empathy and compassion - which can be seen in the acts of the business and political elite as they ride roughshod over the lives and livlihoods and the regular public in the pursuit of power and profit. Never really considered there was another way to see it but I guess there's as many as you could dream up. Maybe Carpenter even actually secretly believes real aliens are amongst us if we're opening the door to all possibilities.

Them telling us that masks don’t matter so that they can hoard them is enough to know you can’t trust these mfers. Not going to get into it but that was their intention. At the end of the day, when the shit hits the fan, you can only count on yourself and maybe a few of your friends. Not all of them. Because think closely. I bet a few of your friends are cowards and would screw you over in order to survive.

it was definitively and scientifically proven during the entirety of trump's presidential tenure.

the main****** media has never been the same since trump called them out for what they are:

              THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE.

this is what freedom/democracy is all about.

an exchange of thoughts, ideas, opinions without fear of being branded, ostracized, censored, and barred from main****** society. which sadly came under tremendous attack during covid and these last few years with people who are like minded as me.

i remind you of your father because im older than you. because the new old heads (millennials) are the link to our past history. i remind you of your father because i think as ive todl you, I USED TO BE LIKE YOU; *******/progressive.

that's why i already know everything you are gonna throw at me. I consumed the very same media source you are consuming right now that you think you have the moral high ground on because you're younger and you and people like you are the most important members of this zeitgeist time period. of course, you guys are the ones that are gonna be working and getting taxed. im american, you are from the UK, there is no difference in the left/right philosophies of america and UK. we are literally the same. the same ruling class, the same pervasive dominant political/philosophical ideology is the *******/progressive mantra. there is a reason for that.

and no i havent seen bob roberts so im going to check that out. thanks for the recommend.

as for the aliens in they live, that's not what its about. not even close.

its a touchy subject because of the people involved. john carpenter specifically designed it this way so he can say it without saying it and get away with it. if you want to know who he's talking about, find out who the front boss ruling classes are in western society.

i can get into it much deeper but then i would be risking getting banned. this should give you some kind of clue as to who im talking about....

dr. fauci and dr. francis collins are responsible for thousands of deaths and they walk around freely.

                  why?
