I remember reading the stats that after transistioning that they still have a high suicide rate of around 40% or so. I could be wrong on that figure, but it is still very high.

It's genuinely not a field I got any major interest in - given it's something that effects such a tiny proportion of the population... it does seem to produce a visceral response in the public psyche far out of proportion to it's impact on their day to day though. Odd.

Mental illness? I dunno man, I don't think it's so simple - in fact I think the overall paradigm that draws a dichotomy between mental / spirtual and physical conditions is being steadily eroded by advances in our understanding of brain chemistry and biology. I don't believe theres any clear boundary there at all.. research into the mental health effects of gut health is one great example of where the dichotomy breaks down and there's many others, specially in genomics.

There is no real question that gender dysphoria is a real phenomenon though there are some who also believe that the increase in reporting levels in recent years - especially amongst girls / young women (who historically had lower reporting levels) - may have more to do with something like hysteria or social contagion. I wouldn't claim to know and I ain't inclined to put in the time for a deep dive on this issue.
