He wasn't ******. He was like a lot of parents with a lot on their minds. 18 month old son was asleep in the back seat, probably he was supposed to have dropped the kid at childcare but his mind was already on something else. You only hear about the tragedies not all the near tragedies. I would have probably offed myself too.
Seems like maybe an alarm system could be devised.

If that would happen to me I wouldn't even know how to go forward in life. You simply give yourself a life sentence of grief and regret.
Don't know how can you forget that the kid or kids are in the back but anything can happen.

Forgetting your kid in the car for having alot on the mind lmfao.. that's the dumbest thing ive ever heard.
We all make mistakes but some errors are not acceptable such as forgetting your baby in the car.
Like Tray mentioned, he might have been on some sht.. drugs, alcohol or whatever but nobody in the right state of mind forgets about their babies in the car regardless of what's " on their mind "..
