The Machinist ending explained

Also why would the ending need explaining. Isn't it explained in the film?

As weird as the movie is, I thought the ending was pretty straightforward and not really needing any explanation.

yeah, after i watched it a couple times i had it pretty much figured out. it's a good film, but one of the greatest of all time? there's lots of films that do what this film did a little better. i like the film but when i first saw it i thought the ending was kind of a letdown, i was expecting a better explanation
