It's an interesting debate but really one of semantics rather than function. We know what viruses do and how they do it, we understand their life cycles and how the reproduce and multiply. Whether we choose to classify that as living or non-living pr some grey area in between doesn't actually make any practical difference although it might stimulate lots of lively conversation in academic circles.

Bit like whether you call Pluto a planet or not or whether you use the now out of favour taxon 'pachyaderm'. It makes not the slightest difference to Pluto's mass or orbit, nor did elephants and Rhinos suddenly change their feeding habits or become more sensitive to insult just because some biologists decide to group em differently. It's just a label.

I'm more interesting in its PURPOSE or origin and its programmable function. Though it should be agreed, I virus can't do anything without a host cell to to do its thing (replicate). I like the video. They show an excavation of a lake in Antarctica underneath 2.2 miles of ice. They found viruses as big as bacteria and virus phages that attacked other viruses.

I agree it's a very interesting debate. Thing is, given how SUCCESSFUL corona has been in creating variants, why hasn't this happened before? Or is it all out of proportion. I mean ASIA are the kingpins having been eating bats, or bat contamination between in its ecosystem it must have affected Humans a long time ago. It's a bit why I still believe that it's not disclosed that particular Chinese populations BEEN having immunity to this. I saw videos in 2020 of major cities in China that were crowded as hell as well as areas close to its origin. Given how the world responded to infection, it's inconsistent with the Chinese or the protocols for containment. Even with masks, they have the highest population so it's all just mind boggling. This fooker was leaked out imo to seize the dollar so that the Chinese Yuan could take the lead, with original 2018 projection delayed.
