    Star Wars: The Old Republic

Not sure how many MMO players are on this board, but is anyone looking forward to The Old Republic online? I'm excited for this game, it looks like BioWare may have a gem, we'll see. I've been following it via official newsletter since it was announced and the content they're adding seems to get better and better. It basically should appeal to people who enjoy MMORPGs, open-ended games, story-driven games, Knights of the Old Republic and of course, Star Wars fans alike.

Folks are already calling it the WoW killer, but I wouldn't go that far. Blizzard has had a chokehold on the market since they released their titan and have effectively destroyed all other MMOs by taking what new innovative content they're planning and using their experience, marketing and cash flow to recreate the idea in a better fashion anyone else. (Ex: Warhammer's siege combat, Aion's fly everywhere style, graphics updates)

Although if one thing is for sure, it's that BioWare is going to put out a solid game. They're sticking true to their story-driven style, it will be fully voice-acted (first time ever in an MMO. there will be no "stock voice" for NPCs, they will all be different) and the story will revolve solely around your character becoming good or evil. They will be using the alignment system and as in KoTOR, it will weigh heavily upon your abilities and your stats.

    Plot:
The game is taking place during a stand off between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, where a treaty was signed and is barely holding together. So basically it leaves you with a perfect MMO setting. You will have your places that are contested and allow for PvP combat and other places where the treaty is honored strictly and those will most likely be your starting zones and neutral cities.

    Classes:

Galactic Republic: Trooper, Smuggler, Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular

Sith Empire: Bounty Hunter, Sith Warrior, Imperial Agent, Sith Inquisitor

    - Official site, all the classes

The class roles can already be assumed, though I posted a link above if you want to see what they have on the official site.. Seems like both sides will be pretty balanced, you'll have your heavy melee tanks, ranged, stealth melee, caster and healing classes. Though there will definitely be skills that allow you to focus on one or more of your class' primary abilities.. Ex: Jedi Consular is a casting class, but you can either choose to heal your friends or use harmful force powers.

    Content:

Above all, here's the site link. If you're looking forward to this game I'd recommend signing up for the news letter, they send you some cool updates.

Here's all of the other useful videos I could find from tutorials to gameplay.

If you've played MMOs before, check out this video below. In every MMO up until this one, you've always traded animations, never really interacted. BioWare is creating combat realness for the first time in an MMO, where your weapons are physical objects within the game. They collide and do damage accordingly, if you block an attack you'll literally block their weapon, if you don't, it will strike your character. Same with blocking blasters and ranged weapons. Pretty badass.

a badass trailer for good measure

    Thanks for reading/watching.

The issue with this is the same issue with the original Star Wars Galaxies MMO: The most compelling characters in Star Wars are the likes of Han Solo and Boba Fett, people who are not actually connected with any of the major factions and are eking out a living in a frontier galaxy. Playing as a smuggler or bounty hunter or space pirate is what appeals to me. But 99% of the people playing it had jedi as their character. Jedis have magical super powers but they made up almost all of the characters you will meet. Sort of put me in mind of this Monty Python sketch:

I agree, everyone wants to be a Jedi or a Sith so there will be a large population of them, but I'm sure BioWare knows this and will entice players to create other classes as well. Also if one thing is for certain in MMOs, the classes that can kill you from far away or stealth to get the jump on you are always tough to deal with. I'm a melee fan, so I'll probably end up trying out a Sith Warrior but in the end, the Bounty Hunter appeals the most to me.

I would like it better if it wasn't a MMO.
