Losing weight is simply a calories in and calories out game. If you eat less calories than you are burning, youll lose weight, regardless if you are working out or not. You probably know this, just setting the foundation. Use a calorie counter to figure out how much calories you should be eating(to maintain your weight), and look to run a caloric deficit from there. Doesnt have to be a major calorie cut starting out, merely cutting out 300-500 calories from your diet will work wonders. Run this caloric deficit for a month or two, and at that point look to readjust your caloric intake (depending on your progress, refigure your calorie counter to seehow many calories you now need to maintain your new current bodyweight, run a deficit from there, etc.)

As far as burning calories, id take a break on your shin splints for a little while man. Let them heal, and return to them later on. Many things you could do to burn calories, id recommend good old fashion weight lifting, with emphasis on compound exercises (squats, deadlifts, pullups, dips, etc). Once you get into better shape, you can superset these exercises. On the squats and such, id go with high rep schemes, in the 8-20 rep range. Feel the burn. Id suggest putting a routing together, many different splits you can do but legs/push/pull is one of the most common/effective.

And lastly, always remember getting in shape isnt a race. Its a personal journey. It takes time and dedication, and is not easy. Otherwise everybody would do it. The competition isnt against other people in the gym, but against the voice in your head that wants you to quit. Good luck.

      - I wouldn't bother with green tea.

As for shinsplints you could do swimming.
I'd recommend Taurine & Potassium (Potassium can be found in high doses in bananas) very cheap and effective.
