Stretching is most certainly not a waste of time. Not stretching is the fastest way to injure yourself.

Stretch after your workout though, stretching before causes your muscles to tighten, which will prevent you from getting the most out of training.

"You don't see lions stretching before they chase a buffalo" is the ******est thing I've ever heard. Are you a lion? No. Then how does what lions do have any bearing on how you should treat your body?

I'd recommend doing dynamic stretching pre-workout (like ) and static stretching post-workout.

Stretching before a workout may make you more susceptible to injury. Also, it could slow you down. You want to always "warm up" by going very light on several muscle groups before training. The warm up can be critical so don't neglect it.

I like to stretch at night as part of a recovery process. And, I'll do a yoga-like routine once a week. Both really help maintain flexibility as well as chase away soreness and lingering problems.
