Amateur in training, looking for review of my routine

    I am 29 years old
I have been training since June 2021 3/4 days a week for 1hr 15 min / 1hr30min sessions with a current pro-boxer, I have missed in total about 3 weeks in all this time due to injury and illness so I think I am fairly dedicated pretty much injury to my shoulder / trap and neck muscle and having covid are the only things that have prevented me from going.

    the routine is usually

    3 rounds skipping
    3 rounds shadow
3 rounds lateral movements around the ring
4-6 rounds on heavy bag or mitts
    200 situps
    100 pushups
    15 mins running

usually one of these days is a cardio only day and the 4th day is sparring day

I started sparring in January and have sparred about 7-8 times at once a week (had to miss a couple due to injury). I lost 30 pounds and now sit at 200lbs aiming to get to 190 I am 5'9 but I carry the weight good even at 200 right now people say I look like 180 (played highschool football and was 175ish at my best weight). Yesterday I ran my fastest mile ever since highschool at 9 min and 45 seconds and I do 3 mile runs twice a week ( I am inconsistent on the running I must admit, but when I do run it is always 3 miles at a interval of 2 min sprint 1 min jog) but I never miss boxing gym sessions I live for them.

My goal is to do amateur fights and see where that takes me not really thinking about going pro but I would like to train like a pro when my body can handle the workload, I just love it and want to test myself.

How is my current training schedule, and if it is lacking for amateurs, what should I add?

I train M,W,THR and spar Fridays

I am confident I can handle a bit more right now it is just a matter of finding the time and creating an effective routine I can stick to.

And my diet is basically toast and 2 eggs for breakfast, greek yogurt, banana and almonds for lunch, apple for snack and then a big healthy dinner everything home cooked.

Thanks! Just looking for outside perspective.

That's what you should drop a vid of. You sparring so they can comment/advise you on your form.

If building your muscles for boxing is all that you are looking for out of it than you are doing fine.

If you want to learn how to box than you are going to want to spar as much as you can, at every opportunity, with the best that they'll allow you to throw with.

How do you get better at football? By pushing the blocking pads around or by getting on the field and playing. The better the competition the better that you'll become.

Same thing with boxing. If you want to learn how to fight than you'll have to get in there and fight in the gym. As James would say, anybody can be a bag beater..................Rockin'

I want to do at least 10 amateur fights is my first goal, and go from there depending on my performance.

Thank you, I definitely agree with what you are saying. I understand sparring as much as possible is the way to go to get more fight experience but should I be looking at 2-3 times a week of sparring even with still being fairly new to sparring? I am looking at it like a marathon not a sprint and would rather take longer to get where I need to be than rush any aspect of my training - my last sparring session was against someone skilled, gave me bloody nose but I finished out the round and he worked with me after the skill difference was established lol he was smaller/ a lot lighter but a lot faster than me

How do you get not new to sparring?

Whenever I went to the gym I was looking to spar, from day 1. What fun is going to the gym if you don't spar?

Either way, with the marathon/sprint comparison, you put one foot in front of the other and train to do excatly what it is that you are going to be doing. It's the same with the fighting.

I am in no way stating that you should forget about the bags and floor work though. You get that done after sparring, except for shadow boxing. Build yourself as great as you can, while you can.

You'll never find the opportunity to do this again, so put your ballz in to everything that you do once that bell rings. You could surprise yourself...........Rockin'
