i have known Am boxers who smoke - not cigs.
and they have had reputable records.
btw, smoking the ganj should not have any effect on the lungs as good quality smoke will take one or two tokes before u dont need any for the rest of the night, or day after.
only kids who think they are cool smoke blunts or samoke excessively.
any smoker/ex-smoker worth his bodyweight in salt knows that u need not more than a toke or two. and mj actually opens the bronchial tubes btw.
so anybody who says mj is reckless just doesnt know what the hell they are talking about, or has been subjected to ditchweed not fit to be used to calm off an angry hornets nest.
Facts are - good MJ is good - in moderation! but if your sport tests, then dont take chance. the little amount of smoke, will not affect your breathing at all. but u dont wanna be dirty on a test if boxing is very important to you.
and dont listen to others who dont know what they hell they talk about. they dont have any nurses or docs in their family i'd bet, or have done research, read research, etc.
and for the record, i'm no pothead. just informed and sees how much damage the misinformation and war on soft drugs have done.
All you guys who think it's cool to smoke a little, go right ahead...Hopefully I'll end up facing you in a tourney one day.
theres this dude at my work who told me he just started boxing. i asked him if he was gonna quit smoking, he smokes weed and cigs constanly. i told him to just give up. He gets winded goign up and down the stairs. he also refuses to run or train or spar with me. (He is about 3 inches taller than me and weighs 20 pounds more)
If you smoke every one in a while i dont think its a bad thing. ill smoke weed maybe honestly Once a month at most, and i never smoke cigs. I think if you want to be serious about how you train keep smoking out of it.

These kinds of comments, and the reply to this does nothing good for the debate or to answer the op's question.
My suggestion, do some online research, from an unbiased source (watch out for "Scientific" studies done by religious groups, or from War on Drugs people, or from Legalize Marijuana people) find actually studies done from non-bias universities and come up with conclusions yourself.
Will it help your boxing? Most Likely not, can it hurt your boxing, possibly but maybe not, if you want to take that risk, its your right/decision, however I'd suggest doing research, and be skeptical of what people tell you if they don't have scientific evidence backing up there statements, and then be skeptical of the "evidence" they show you, make sure it was a legit study and not a study with a predetermined outcome

My comment basically stated my thoughts on it. I've done research firsthand and experienced the effects of Marijuana over extended periods of time, so I know better than any bull**** "War on Drugs" program or so called scientific experiment. Just like you're doig in stating your opinion, that is what I did as well. Lighten up
Plenty of boxers amateur and pro take all sorts of illegal drugs and have all sorts of habits.
Smoke in any form is bad for an athlete's lungs, no two ways about it, the carbon/tar deposits clogg up the bronchi/alveoli (rusty biology spelling!) in the lungs and make oxygen absorption less efficient. Thats in addition to all the negatives once the contents get into your blood stream.
Basically, dont do it if you are serious about your sport and dont want a criminal record.
I know a few accomplished amatuers who have told me it does infact effect their performance. From what I've been told, it really affects your focus and metal stability in the ring. Any of you follow the amatuers? A fighter named Javontae Starks, in which I go to his gym, has taken a major downfall and has been losing lately because he gasses in the begginings of a fight and he mentaly is not there. I know a few others, even some MMA fighters who have told me it has affected their performance.
