Leonard was also smart in challenging Duran right away after he lost knowing Duran likes to balloon up in between fights...

Regardless Leonard did his job and won against Marvelous and Duran...
Leonard also got whipped by the "Hitman" in their second and third fight. Terry Norris beat his ass and Hector Camacho knocked his ass out.

Don't compare Sugar Ray to Floyd or he'll give you a beating like he gave to Sr.

He was washed up by the Terry Norris fight and was an old man when Camacho got to him...

But Hearns did win the 2nd fight...even Leonard acknowledges it...

Pryor said he had an offer to fight Leonard (and Duran as well), but wanted more money.

This Leonard ducking Pryor myth just shows how HBO's Legendary Nights has polluted boxing fans with myth and half-truths. And also how people get overly excited over something as meaningless as a "call-out" as opposed to how fights, are you know, actually made. With contracts, negotiations, lawyers, and signatures.

In the late 80s, specifically 1989, if there were boxing message boards and all that ****, you can bet people would be all over Leonard for his choice of opposition. Michael Nunn was viewed by pretty much everyone as the top guy at MW, especially after his one round KO over Sumbu Kalambay, and there was some talk about him fighting Leonard. But Leonard instead took much more lucrative fights over a supposedly shot Tommy Hearns, and then the rubber match with Roberto Duran.

Leonard was supposed to fight Pipino Cuevas for the WBA WW title, but ended up fighting Wilfred Benitez for the WBC title instead, and then fought Cuevas's conqueror in Hearns. I can't remember the exact details behind the fallout of the Cuevas fight. So there are those who have said that Ray/Ray's team avoided Pipino. In the long run I feel that Benitez was the superior fighter to Cuevas and probably stood a better shot at beating Ray.

Funny how people associate slapping someone as kicking their ass. You think Leonard won, fine but admit HOW he won. Taunting, pitty pat punches, and having the crowd on his side. Hagler indisputably did more damage to Leonard, far more damage.
