I really like both guys but i think i will give a slight edge to Ryder. I love his style, the way he slips and counters on the inside is very stylish for a British fighter. He has good power aswell. I think as well his headmovement could give BJS fits as he tends to throw in flurries. If Ryder is the boxer i think he is he can avoid lots of the punishment coming at him and try and time BJS in between those flurries.
Having said that though i personally havent seen him in with someone who fights on the backfoot. Most of the fights ive seen he hasnt had to work hard to get in range. BJS uses LOTS (too much imo) of movement. How Ryder can deal with that will have a huge bearing on the fight. Another factor could be that BJS has gone 12 rounds what 3-4 times? Whereas Ryder hasnt been past 8.
He came on strong in the Eamon O'Kane fight but who knows how he will cope with the extra four rounds.
So yeah Ryder decision for me. DEFINITELY not sure though
Picked-up my copy of Boxing News and their reviewers have gone heavily for Saunders based upon the decent logic that Billy's had a far more extensive/testing amateur career, beaten the bigger names in the pros as well as the general view that he's already shown us he has the talent to win fights in a number of different ways.
But with the possible exception of the Aussie lad Fletcher (who I don't think was as good as he was actually advertised) I think Ryder is by far and away the most serious man Saunders has had to face.
John could be the first man with the speed, guile and strength to push Billy back and then keep him back long enough to exert a bit of sustained, properly uncomfortable pressure.
Ryder is nicknamed 'The Gorilla' but I think he's a wee bit smarter than that monicker and Saunders is going to have be at this best.
My dough is still firmly on Saunders and I don't rule out the possiblity of him starting fast and letting his hands go and testing Ryder's own toughness. But the smart money has to be on a late stoppage or points win for Billy.
Thought the Saunders v Ryder fight was very decent with John (in particular)showing that he's got a lot of ability, grit and is surely going to win a belt at some later point. He'll be disappointed at being edged out but should be looking at this positively; he matched a top guy and often tested him.
It will be interesting to see what Billy Joe does next, he's got to be confident having come through a properly decent performer like John but I am not sure he's ready to cross swords with Murray, Macklin or Barker.
British middleweight scene is bursting with quality right now with Barker, Murray, Macklin, Saunder, Eubank and Ryder all out there. Good times!
That said Saunders must have incredible fitness even watching him is exhausting - all that movement!
Ryder has a very nice defence for a come forward type and cut off the ring very well. He looks the type that will improve hugely with experience. He basically lost it on activity and that BJS is a very fit bloke. He did do a lot of holding though - anyone else think the ref could have pinched a point of BJS especially in the 12th?
I think both guys will fight for world titles. Also neither looks particularly vulnerable to me. BJS was buzzed slightly in one round and I don't think Ryder really felt a shot all night. They both look like they can hold a shot.
