I think it boils down to two things in their first fight;
1)Holyfield was able to absorb some shots from Tyson that would have knocked out 99.9% of the human population.
And
2)He was able to time Mike coming in. Which he did, when he knocked Mike down in the 7th with a massive body shot to the sternum. Then he landed a beautiful counter in the 10th, because Mike left his straight up in the air after missing.
And let us not forget; Holyfield DID headbutt quite a bit in this fight. So much so, that it would be hard to say it wasn't intentional.
Regardless, he fought a heck of a fight, and won. And nobody thought he would win that fight.
