Trivia Challenge: the most prolific night of boxing

I been keeping out an eye for that night.

09/14/1923 is the best I have come across, with prize fights in 35 different venues on the same day.

Anyone know of a more prolific night of fights?

Not as many cards but still prolific.

    All on 03-31-80
    Capitol Center, Landover, Maryland, USA
Ray Leonard vs. Dave 'Boy' Green
    WBC welterweight Title

Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
    Larry Holmes vs. Leroy Jones
    WBC heavyweight Title
    Marvin Camel vs. Mate Parlov
    WBC cruiserweight Title
    Thomas Hearns vs. Santiago Valdez
    Alexis Arguello vs. Gerald Hayes

Stokley Athletics Center, Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
    Mike Weaver vs. John Tate
    WBA heavyweight title
Eddie Mustafa Muhammad vs. Marvin Johnson
    WBA Light Heavyweight Title

For me a busy, memorable night. If memory serves me right many of the title fights were telecast on HBO

I doubt, if that date even makes a Top-100!

In recent years there have been lots and lots of days with more than 50 promotions.

      11/12/2016 saw 66 promotions, worldwide.

Wow, yea - I was looking at old dates never realized the fight game was so prolific today.

There were eight different venues in Argentina alone; that was more than even Mexico with six.

Has today the game gotten more popular or back in the '20s and '30s were some of the foreign fights not making it into the record books?

I guess a world population that moved from 3 billion to 7.5 billion might have something to do with it; but you are correct by that standard 35 isn't much at all. -- Most of the '20s and '30s show an average of 20 fight cards most nights. I thought the 35 was huge. LOL

Even in the states. Seems like the same 6 venues over and over and over again.

It's difficult to say, as popularity isn't really a "measurable" entity - though there can be little doubt, that boxing in the US was MUCH bigger back in the 20s and 30s, compared to today.

But in lots of other places around the world, boxing is now booming - and of course many more countries have taken up pro boxing (especially after the collapse of the Soviet "empire").

So the biggest difference between "then" and "now" is probably, that whereas the US used to be completely dominant - the sport today has become truly international.

Anyway, that's how I see it.
