Dave Tiberi should have called out Julian Jackson in 1992

Why did Tiberi retire after being robbed against James Toney (who now admits he lost that fight). I recall because of the Hawk's inability to get Toney in the ring, there were suggestions of him fighting WBA champion Reggie Johnson, who like Tiberi, were thought to have beaten Toney.

Toney won over McCallum in a rematch for the IBF belt in 1992, Jackson defending against Tiberi and probably knocking him out later in that year makes him the best middleweight instead of Toney.

Toney did lose to Tiberi, IMO; but called out The Hawk on numerous occasions. You can blame Won King for that match never happening. Toney never ducked anyone; and, personally, I think he would have destroyed the overrated Jackson.

Jackson would have clocked the swarming Tiberi inside of 2 Rounds, as Dave only knew one direction: straight into the meat-grinder. SPLAT.

Pretty much agree with all of this...

Jackson would have beheaded Tiberi in brutal fashion, similar to hearns-Duran

Would have loved to seen toney vs Jackson or g-man during this period

Toney will beat Jackson numerous times but in 1992, when Toney was struggling to make the 160 pound limit, Jackson may caught him, just as Reggie Johnson did.

Possible, of course; but Reggie was a slick southpaw, Jackson was pdedictable: orthodox power puncher. He had some skill; BT my point is he wasn't the boxer Johnson was and very few opponents are as difficult for an Orthodox fighter to time and defeat as a slick southpaw, which Johnson was.....and I think that was a major factor in his success with Toney.

If anything, I think it is a credit to Toney that he was angle to beat Johnson under those conditions, with his weight issues, at that time.

Tiberi vs any middleweight of the time would simply not sell very well, if you could even find a promoter to put up cash for the fight. Tiberi never beat a 'credible' opponent to prove his worth and was rather ordinary. His display against a weight drained Toney, a fight that could have gone either way, was his biggest accomplishment.

Jackson would have set Tiberi on his ass in little time with his head being dismembered and sent 30 rows back somewhere.

Not even Kearns could have sold a Jackson/Tiberi fight as anything other than a wholesale slaughter/complete mismatch.

I bet if Tiberi came back and earned a rematch, Toney would have trained and destroyed him.

If it wasn't for James being so weak from dropping the weight than James would have beaten Tiberi easily, no question about it.

They were clearly two different classes of fighter. Tiberi probably got jobbed in that fight, but he'd have no chance in a rematch. That may be why he turned it down.
