Jack Dempsey got a lot of grief for being labelled a draft dodger. Many wanted to see Carpentier beat him!

I think a lot of people hated on Mike Tyson beginning when he lost to Douglas and things were going down hill for Mike but in terms of 88 and previously I would say that Mike Tyson was universally loved the whole world over at that time.

Everybody of any nationality who doesn't even know boxing who was atleast a child in that era can identify who Mike Tyson was and be reminded of an unbeatable knock out machine, regardless of how much truth there is in that.

So people still loved Robinson, despite beating his wife? I guess that wasn't reported in any newspapers back then?

Yes I do not think his dark side came out until after his active days were done.

Man, that's at least one good thing about more access to news with the Internet. The bad thing can be lack of privacy though.
