    Hitman Hearns: What if...

If Thomas Hearns ran from Sugar Ray in the final rounds of their last fight, until the final bell and winning a decision. If he tried to keep a distance and play it safe in the third round of Hagler fight until its stopped because of cuts and granting him a win. and if he got the decision in the second Leonard fight...

How much higher will he be ranked as an ATG?

I think if those events took place tommy would have been ranked higher without a doubt. It is not impossible to imagine them happening as well as even sugar ray admits that he feels that tommy should have gotten the decision in the second fight. The hagler fight could have very well been stoped on cuts if marvin did not go after tommy hard and if tommy could have survived that onslaught. Having said all this would there have been rematchs if tommy won those fights. Tommys ranking as an atg may not have been as high as some of his fans would like to see but take a look a ray leonard face in the first fight and you know that he had been in a fight same as hagler. He was a very exciting fighter fighting in a era of good competion and he avoided no one.

he's already third best welterweight. but if he had beaten leonard and hagler decisively, i think he might have had an argument for goat. blasphemy to some i know, but those guys aren't considered close to being the best or the best all time in their divisions by some for no reason.

Well the thing is, ATG lists are subjective opinions on what you consider more noteworthy achievements.

You could have Tommy at #1 P4P ATG and it wouldn't be 'wrong', there is no right or wrong. The problem comes when people have to back up their rankings with reasons.

In the first Leonard fight he did try to fight from a distance and box. I was so suprised to see Leonard chasing him trying to cut down off the ring. Before the fight I really expected it to be the other way around.

Hagler really didn't give Hearns a chance to fight any other fight. But I suspect at the time Hearns didn't mind because he probably felt he had the power to stop Hagler. And he hit Marvin with every thing but the kinchen sink but Hagler was a tough son of a gun.

Wait Hearns is the third best welterweight?

Hearns does not have the 3rd best resume as a welterweight. Not even close.

If you are talking heads to head skills then maybe, but then it is irrelevant whether he beats Leonard if were talking h-2-h anyway.

That fight was closer than people think. If he runs for three rounds Leonard probably evens the points tally in all seriousness.

its not all about resume to me. ability has to factor in as well. and he was probably the most gifted welterweight of all time.

I think ray robinson was the most gifted welter of all despite being 2 inches shorter than tommy he had a better chin, better stamina, stronger legs ,better coordination and just as much power. Ask gene fullmer

Unbelievable, classic case of overrating Robinsons tools.
Tommy Hearns carried his power all the way upto cruiserweight where he was starching some pretty useful 200lb'ers. I'm telling you for a fact Robinson hit absolutely noway near as hard as Hearns who is p4p one of the hardest punchers to ever lace them up.

                    Better coordination?
