He was short of great, as proven by his series against Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles, but he was a very good boxer who beat the best of the rest.

Maxim was a very good fighter who possesed a fantastic left-hook although he was not a power-puncher more of a boxer he held his own with the very best in the world throughout his long career winning the Light-Heavyweight Title from Britains Freddie Mills ending Mills career with a 10rd KO, Maxim was good enough to beat the excellent Jimmy Bivins as well as a controversial decision victory over Floyd Patterson, yet his most famous victory was the night Ray Robinson challenged him for his Light-Heavy Title and Robinson as well as the referee collapsed due to heat exhaustion handing the victory to Maxim... Maxim failed in a bid to win the Heavyweight Title from Ezzard Charles in 1951.... is he an ATG.. imo he just falls short.

Based on today's standards, he would be considered ATG, but by true standards, just misses the cut.

Maxim pretty much goes unnoticed and could very well be underrated historicly. Not mentioned is that he is the only fighter to have beaten Sugar Ray Robinson, Jersey Joe Walcott and Floyd Patterson. He lost the bouts to Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore but Maxim's great chin held up as neither of the legends could stop him in a total of six bouts. He also fought 115 times against many greats and was only stopped once in his entire career.

ATG, I guess that would depend on your criteria for an "ATG". Does he belong on a platform with Ray Robibson, Ali, The Brown bomber and Henry Armstong etc, No!
but he might make the second or even third cut.
