Just a few random thoughts,
It was amazing in Tokoyo that night twenty years ago, Douglas got away with alot of things Tyson would have decapitated opponents for earlier in his career. But on that night everything worked for Douglas. Sure he got knocked down by a punch he admitted he didn't see coming. However seeing a fighter like Douglas repeatedly throw the uppercut from the outside and get away with it, reflects the sad condition Tyson had fallen into. And Iron Mike, once the monster, no longer bobbed and weaved. No longer came in low. He walked straight in an upright stance looking to land the one big punch.
Unfortunitely that same Douglas uppercut from the outside that once set up a title winning performance would also be his un-doing as a young sharp fighter in Holyfield countered the same dangerously thrown uppercut with a right hand over the top that seperated Douglas from his senses.
And twenty years later Buster Douglas appeared as a in studio guest on
ESPN2 Friday Night Fights to reflect on that night in Tokoyo. Douglas looked to be in great health and has his diabetes and weight under control. It was good of Buster to make that appearance and good to hear him reflect, but it was best to see he is well after all he has been through!

Not quite the same uppercut...he threw it from farther and with less snap against Holy. A hanging curve if you will.
Buster fought a great fight that night and I don't mean to take too much away from that but Tyson definitely was not up for that fight. He wasnt pumped up for it. I think that would have made all the difference. His corner was a joke and he was not into the fight. He was'nt training hard he wasn't thinking about fighting and the science of it, he was just going throught the motions. Nobody in the corner gave him any good advice. And meanwhile Buster was beating his ass round after round. The Tyson that fought Spinks takes Buster out inside of 5. But Tyson's got nobody to blame but himself. Another thing that people dont usually talk about is that Tyson was a tough guy, he lasted a long time in that fight after getting hit with monster punches, and the same with Holyfield and even Lewis. Teddy Atlas is always talking about how Tyson was beat once you fought him back but Tyson never just quit, he kept fighting until he was beat down.
