My first comment:
Good post!
Pedestrians have no idea how "athletically special" a person has to be just to rise up into the top 50 in Boxing; let alone the top 10 or 20. It's the hardest sport in the world to do that in, and not by a little.
My second comment:
Unlike team sports where an athlete can represent a city even if he's never been there before being drafted by that team; but in individual sports such as boxing, an athlete honestly represents himself. His place of origin, his former occupation, his race, his religion, his political leanings...everything. Boxing history is steeped in a tradition whereby ethnic groups are represented by their very best natural fighters are entered into contests to represent entire groups. In the old fight halls, the English would all sit in a section to cheer on their representative. ***s in another section, Blacks in another, Irish in another, Italians, Japanese, Mexican, Polish, Russian, Scottish, Argentinian, Southern, Northern, West coast, East coast, and so on.
The concept of a "Great White Hope" sees it's origin stemming from that, fairly innocent tradition of pride.
My Final comment:

Some, like Chuvalo, did their biggest work in the 60's, but carried on strong into the 70s block.JAB5239 likes this.
