    Ike Williams

For those who haven't seen more footage of the great Ike Williams aside from his fight with Beau Jack:

There's some kind of an error with the videos since the Bolanos and Beau Jack fights are mixed up.

Williams was a big heavy handed lightweight(135), who regulary licked welterweights. He had tremendous athletic ability. And a smooth like butter style, with shap reflexes.

He was pretty well schooled counterpunhcer in his prime. And had a sharp/snappy jab, a peach of a uppercut and good power in both hands.

At only 22, Ike would win the NBA version of the lightweight title in his 72 fight. And then unified the title in his 96 fight. He would make eight defences in a combined reign that lasted 6 years.

Willams once went on a run of 20 straight wins and in that streak he had victories over Lightweight Champions Bob Montgomery and Beau Jack, and welterweight champion Kid Galvin and Johnny Braxton. Very impressive indeed.

It was pretty sad that Ike was burned out the time he reached 27 years of age, but what can you expect at age 22 Ike was on his 72 fight.

He later testified that he took bribes to the USA senate, that he had been offered to throw fights against Gavlin (the second time) and Jimmy Carter. In both fights he was defeated, but said he didn't takes bribes.

One of the best lightweights of all time, and a great fighter in his prime and a true ATG.

Even do they are mixed, you posted Ike Williams vs. Enrique Bolanos 2, which Ike would win on SD.The first time Bolanos and Williams met, Williams stopped him in 8.They would meet for a third time and Williams would stop him in 4.

Bolanos was in his own right a good fighter, In his prime he was a top contender of the 40's, and always fell short when facing of against Williams for the title, which there is no shame in. But he did have good wins over Maxie Docusen,John Thomasx2, and Chalky Wrightx3, Harry Jeffra and Carmine Fatta.

He also battled another all time great in Manuel Ortiz, he fought Ortiz in Augest 29 1944 early on in his career, Otiz was much more exprienced and had 2 pound on him and stopped him in 6.

He was born 1925-01-01 in Mexico, but lived in Los Angeles USA.I dout many posters on here will know him. As he's never really spoke about.

        Here's a picture of him

"I fought Bolanos three times. I defended the title against him three times. But the third fight, the third fight I fought the greatest fight I fought in my life. I felt like I could have fought forever. Jack Dempsey was the referee that night. I'd been beating (Bolanos) for 4 rounds, but the last punch was a right to the body. That's the last punch I hit him with. It was a right hand to the body. He went down slowly. He was as knocked out as any fighter ever was. That's the fight I would have bet my life on that I would have whipped any lightweight that ever lived that night, the last fight with Bolanos."

How do you guys compare Williams compared to the rest of the all time 135 elite (certainly Gans, Leonard, Duran, and throw in Whitaker and Mayweather from the 12 rounds era). I always leave him out, althought he is my kind of fighter more than any of the other 5 I mentioned.

Resume wise he is up there with the best. I rate Duran, Gans and Leonard ast tops all time at 135, but I would rank Williams higher than Pea and certainly higher than Mayweather at that weight. I might rate Carlos Ortiz or Tony Canzoneri higher, but I don't think I would anybody else.

You say throw ''Mayweather and Whitaker in there'' Whitaker should be in there with the elite group, alongside Gans Leonard and Duran. Not just thrown in.(Forget about the round era's, Benny Leonard and Duran didn't fight in the same rounds era but they are still in the same elite group together)

Pernell was the first to unify the division, since the great Roberto Duran had left it. He made 8 defence's of his IBF Lightweight title and and made 6 defences of the undisputed crown. In his lightweight reign he beat 2 hall of famers in Azumah Nelson and Jose Luiz Ramirez. And was never properly defeated at the weight, his only loss was a complete robbery against Ramirez the first.

He also avoided no one at the weight, also beat good fighters such as Roger Mayweather,Greg Haugen,Freddie Pendleton, and Policarpo Diaz.

So to just say lets throw Whitaker and Mayweather in the mix, like they both were on the same level as lightweights and both achieved similat to each other, is a insult to Whitaker.(IF THATS WHAT YOU MENT)

As Mayweather's run as a lightweight is no were near Whiatker's and his run as Lightweight was decent and pretty medicore. He had 4 fights at the weight, one alot people thought he shound't of got against Jose Luis Castillo, he would beat Castillio again and then beat medicore contenders Victoriano Sosa and Phillip N'dou. He could of fought much better at the weight, and gave one of his worst performances at the weight.

And his lightweight days and reign shound't be mentioned alongside the likes of Duran's, Leonard, and Whitaker etc.
