Comments Thread For: Bob Santos: Lenier Pero is Ready For Anyone in The Top 15

Lenier Pero (9-0) delivered an explosive performance as promised. The 30-year-old southpaw stopped Viktor Faust in the 8th round of their back and forth affair Saturday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio that kicked off a Showtime televised tripleheader.

Pero is decent but he was losing that fight with Faust until he landed that body shot that made him quit IMO. Needs a little more seasoning before they put him in heavy again.

PBC should put him right back in the ring on Wilder vs. Ruiz, whenever that's happening! WBO #7 Ali Eren Demirezen would be a good choice, and so would IBF #14 Charles Martin! Not sure what their relationship is, but WBC #3 Frank Sanchez would be the best choice of them all!!!

Yeah, IDK Faust was nailing him w/ some shots that a top 15 guy probably gets him out of there with.He did comeback and get the stoppage so all credit to him.But top 15 he is not ready for IMHO.

I like the Martin fight next. I think he beat Sanchez a few times in the amateurs iirc, but I think Sanchez is a bit too grand a step up at the minute. Wasn't massively impressed against Faust, although the body work was good.

On a side note, I very much doubt Wilder-Ruiz happens. PBC can't afford it, it seems. Hopefully it does though, I think I saw they've reserved the MGM Grand for Cinco de Mayo weekend or something, so maybe they'll throw it on then.

Pero is the flavor of the day with his come form behind Ko but he was almost beaten Faust quit with a body shot. Smart fans know Faust had shaky moment in his last fight vs a no name.

Lot of heavyweights will line up to meet Pero. He is not that good and the Cuban has a bit if of a glass jaw.

They can afford it! They're gonna make us pay for it anyway! This is a fight worthy of a PPV, much more than Tank vs. Hector Garcia, and Ruiz vs. Arreola! Pero doesn't look as good as Sanchez, but Sanchez needs a fight ASAP! I would rather see him fight Michael Hunter or Filip Hrgovic! However he might want revenge from the amateurs?

There's been rumours of unrest with Wilder both to do with their offer for this fight and how long it's taken for him to be paid for other fights. I think I read something similar with Jaron Ennis, unhappy with his pay. All the background context points to potential financial problems with PBC, especially with the whole Showtime issue.

Being serious, I really don't think PBC can afford this fight. Their champions fight very infrequently anyway.

I agree though, it's a definite PPV, probably does really well as well. Intriguing fight.

Well I spoke too soon! Seems things aren't looking good! Boots Ennis is not signed to PBC, only Showtime, and Showtime is about to be bought out by Paramount+

Andy Ruiz Vs Filip Hrgovic – Who Wins?
                  2/14/2023

With no apparent movement on the WBC ordered elimination bout between former heavyweight champions Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz, comes a curveball in the form of an IBF ordered purse bid for an interim title fight between Ruiz and unbeaten contender Filip Hrgovic. The date for the bid is February 28th. Mike Coppinger broke the news.

Wilder, if reports can be believed, is unhappy with PBC, and with the money on offer for the fight with Ruiz, and the former WBC champ is said to be “exploring other options,” as in which fight to take and who he could move on to work with. There is plenty of chatter about the possibility of Wilder fighting former UFC heavyweight star Francis Ngannou next if the Ruiz fight – which is still a possibility – doesn’t get nailed down.

As confusing as the Wilder situation is (with there being yet more chatter, this suggesting Wilder and Tyson Fury recently engaged in “secret talks,” the topic of conversation being a possible fourth fight between the two, this if the Fury-Oleksandr Usyk fight for some reason falls apart) – the IBF order is something nobody saw coming.

As a fight, Ruiz Vs. Hrgovic is a good one, an interesting one, but Usyk is the IBF heavyweight champion and why there is any need for an interim champion, what with Usyk all set to fight Fury in a massive unification showdown, only the folks at the IBF know. In addition, with this ordered purse bid, the organisation has seemingly forgotten one of its own rules, this being (according to Wikipedia) IBF rule 16. B: no purse bids can be called for interim championship bouts.

No wonder the man on the street gets confused when asked to name the heavyweight champion, or champions.

But sticking to the boxing and forgetting the politics if we can, Ruiz, 35-2(22) and just two wins removed from his out of shape December, 2019 rematch defeat to Anthony Joshua, would be the toughest foe yet for the 15-0(12) Hrgovic – on paper at least. Hrgovic struggled mightily in his last outing, this when he laboured to a debatable 12 round decision win over Zhilei Zhang on the Usyk-Joshua II card last August.

If Ruiz does get this fight, and if “The Destroyer” turns up in good shape, Hrgovic could be in trouble. For some time, plenty of us felt Hrgovic was the avoided danger man of the division, a future champion if only he would be able to get the top guys in the ring with him. That Zhang fight seriously changed this opinion. Or did Hrgovic merely have a bad night in Saudi Arabia?
