But out of sight, out of mind I suppose.....

They don't matter. There will be no news coverage.

You win news coverage by making the journalists fear being murdered/****d if they don't appease you.

You won't see it on the news but Indigenous people have been supporting *** in MPLS. There's a reason for that.

Up here in Canada there may not be as many shootings but indigenous people are treated unfairly and sometimes fatally. I don't agree with everything they want but they have a right to say it and not be targeted by the police and others. Aboriginal women are going missing at a shocking rate and until recently nothing much has been done. On remote reserves many people do not have proper sanitation. Natives make up a disproportionate percentage of inmates.

It's no surprise it's not on the news. The powers that be do not want the issues of first people brought to light and the mass media news is nothing more than a corporate whore, these days. I hate to say it, but the first people are the invisible people, the forgotten people...out of sight, out of mind, as far at the majority of Americans are concerned; and that's a damn shame. Most rez's, from what I've read, are in no better condition than third world countries......yet....no press. Why?

The answer to "what makes the news" and what is newsworthy falls squarely into two brackets.
              1. Will it encourage people to tune in and bolster the ratings and
              2. If somebody higher up the food chain deems the story important and puts pressure on the General Management of the network to broadcast it and push it.

              That's it.

Following those guidelines, since most Americans are ignorant of issues facing "original peoples", any story around them, which is not spectacular, is going to be a risk of them changing the channel; and no one in power wants any positive news or humanizing news about native Americans on the airwaves, because such a story would reintroduce them and their concerns to the public at large. That's why they were portrayed as trouble-makers during the pipeline story a few years ago. And you'll notice the slant used in that story promptly encouraged outrage against them as well as anti-protesting laws, which are in a clear violation of our right to free speech.

How a story is told and portrayed is just as important, if not morseso, than the story itself. So, since the corporate media is merely a lapdog, these days, for the corporations who own them, it should surprise no one that they also follow the interests of those corporations investments.

Thanks for sharing the links, Mammoth.
