    Borderlands 2's Greatest Weapon: Humor

Much will be said about Borderlands 2′s looting and shooting, and it would be remiss of me to write yet another “review” of the game here. But I do feel the need to comment on one area of the title which I believe Gearbox is really driving the entire medium forward.

Yes, Borderlands as a series as done many original things. Its cell shaded art style flies in the face of a decade of graphical advancement. Its loot drop focus in an FPS was an almost entirely new concept for the genre. But with Borderlands 2? Gearbox may have released the funniest game ever made, and that’s an achievement they should be most proud of.

Games often try to be funny, but in the end, things can go…awry. Duke Nukem Forever is the prime example of the anti-Borderlands. It’s a game that doesn’t take itself seriously, which is a good start, but it’s jokes are stale and forced, and despite crudity or pop culture references, they fall flat.

There are games with funny characters, like Mass Effect 2′s Mordin or Portal 2′s GLaDOS and Wheatley, and I would argue the latter is a fairly funny game through and through. Prior to this week, I’d have said Portal 2 was the funniest game ever made, but so far, Borderlands 2 is giving it a run for its money.

The game is written by Mikey Neumann and Anthony Burch. I’m less familiar with Neumann, but many will recognize Burch from the long running video game web series, “Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin?” In only one or two minute clips, he and his sister Ashly craft a comedy sketch around a particular game, and they’re some of the funniest gaming-related videos on the internet. Gearbox was wise to hire him.

Burch and Neumann have brought a dark sense of humor to the game that was almost on point during the first title, but here they’re landing hit after hit as each sub-mission seems even more hilarious than the last.

There be spoilers ahead, for those who would wish not to know some of the better jokes from the first 3/4ths of the game.

But be warned their may be slight spoilers. For example, names of funny missions you get, and the missions explained in detail. I read it and it wasn't that much of a spoiler but I know a lot of gamers are sensitive to any kind of spoiling. To be honest, there really isn't any spoiler in this article.
