It helps with hand eye coordination.. but you get that with double end bag too. And I'd recommend double end bag any day to speed bag. You can work on your dodging, timing, distance, etc. I've also noticed speed bag helps your arms, close to the bicep region. But the way you punch the speed bag really has no relevance to your boxing stance. So I find speed bag not that useful other than eye hand coordination... maybe timing but again, you can use the latter for that

I partially disagree with you momentrising but I also partially agree.
Speed bag helps you coordinate your feet and body with your punches also shoulder conditioning as well as hand eye coordination and more.
There are a couple different ways to hit the speed bag. You can even work technique.
Momentrising is right about the double end bag except for disregarding the speed bag because of it. Both bags work similar things but also work different things.

Eye hand coordination, arm and shoulder work, foot work if you have a good teacher who shows you how to work 360 degrees!
My gym had 6 spd. bags and they were utilized every other day by ALL my fighters amateurs and pros a like. No different than doing anything in a gym, if you do it right you'll benefit!
I'm not aware of gyms losing favor with the spd. bags. The gym I donate time to here in S.W. Fl. utilizes them.
The ones I hung in 1969 are still in place today with the Gym now owned and operated by one of my students from the mid eighties!

One's maximum visual acuity is determined by the density of cones in the macula, an oval- shaped spot on the retina of the eye. Cone density in humans is akin to to the megapixel rating in digital cameras. Someone who scores 20/15 can stand at a distance of twenty feet and tell the difference between o and c that typical person, with 20/20 vision, could only detect if they scooted up to fifteen feet. Unfortunately the number of cones appears to be "genetically predetermined for each of us".
Some athletes simply do have superior reactions speeds. In a 1969 test Muhammad Ali reacted to a light in 150 milliseconds, near the theoretical limit of visual reaction time. I'm beginning to think that the speed bag doesn't help at all in hand to eye coordination!

Everyone is born with preset natural abilities but that doesnt mean we cant sharpen those abilities.
Ali was born with fantastic reaction ability but that ability was made even better through practice.
And of course the speed bag helps hand eye coordination. You see the bag with your eye and coordinate with your hand to hit it. Just like seeing a baseball when someone throws it at you and you have to catch it or dribbiling a basketball.
