Make him come to you, the opposite of what he wants. Then when he gets you in a corner/ropes turn him around and go to town on him. They are hard to fight, i'm guessing he's tall/lanky?

What you do and how you do it will depend largely on your individual style. However, having good fundamentals means that you must learn how to cut off the ring. Some of these fancy-dancy boxers can very very slippery and hard to hit, so you have to figure out how to get them in range and right front of you. Usually it means you have to force them on the ropes. The basic approach is to step left when they step left, step right when they step right. Learning to cut off the ring is not easy to do and takes a lot of practise through ring drills and shadow boxing.

yeah he's alot taller with alot more reach.. not lanky.. he's about 10kgs heavier than me.. id try to walk through if not for the power.. ive definitely got to give that a go.. letting him bring the fight..

cheers for the response.. i can definitely work on cutting off the ring. i think though im able to get him to the ropes well enough.. it's just that im eating punches on the way in and not being able to keep him there well enough.. hard to fight in the pocket against a much stronger guy who's hell bent on getting out..

I remember once I was sparring one of these slippery guys. I struggled to cut off the ring against him so the only way I could get him cornered was to force a clinch and push/walk him to the ropes and quickly offload shots to the body. I kept doing this til he slowed down and I could finally cut off the ring. It's more tiring to be constantly moving back and to the sides than it is to come forward. So keep working him and he will slow down.

Yeah that makes it a lot more difficult when they weigh a fair bit more than you, I have exactly the same problem the guy is 10kg+ more than me and much longer reach. Maybe try jabbing his rear hand, protecting the face from his jab and walking in, then attack when your in close enough so his straights aren't effective? I hope someone can help you out better than i can haha

Theres a few techniques that could help. You could move back and when he comes up throw you're self at him with a good right hook or left hook.

The best strategy like the others said is to cut off the ring. Get him onto the ropes or into a corner and unload. Also try to work the body as much as possible when he's on the ropes. That will take out his legs and he will slow down. Then you can pounce on him. You're going to have to bob and weave man. Walk forward and duck his punches. You can also stop moving forward and make him force the fight.

come in low with head movement. that way if he hits you he has to hit you high on the head, keep both hands up and watch for uppercuts.

pound his body, if you sap some of his energy he'll probably move less and trade more.

i usually use a jab to get in. i land a strong jab then come in with a straight right to the body and just keep punching!

tyson also used to use a jab to get in close.
