Bonavena, Stevenson, Golota: Trio Will Be Remembered As Much As A Champion?

It might come as a surprise that in boxing history, professionals from Argentina, Cuba, and Poland have never laid claim to the prize that was once the most coveted in all of sports – the heavyweight boxing championship of the world.

Oscar Bonavena, Teofilo Stevenson, and Andrew Golota are the greatest heavyweights from Argentina, Cuba, and Poland, respectively. Without a doubt, each guy shook the boxing world in his own way. Although Stevenson competed solely as an amateur, success is relative and history will judge how three Olympic Gold Medals stack up against facing names like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Lennox Lewis, and Mike Tyson in a professional prizefight.

When fans think of the heavyweight division through the years, however, names that resonate are those from the United States, Ukraine, and England. That being said, will this trio of heavyweights – Bonavena, Stevenson, and Golota – despite never winning a title, still be remembered in the historical legacy of boxing's glamour division just for the mere fact of their immense contribution to boxing in Argentina, Cuba, and Poland?

Golata was the Howard Stern Show of boxing, so his antics in the ring will entertain future generations.

Stevenson is the unknown quantity who knocked out a lot of amateurs and happened to live in a glamorous age for professional boxing in which he was not allowed to compete. Only die hard fans will continue to speculate with scraps of information.

Bonavena was a rugged, hulking animal who competed well against major lights in a golden age and gave them a good workout.

None are names on the street but are still occasionally spoken of in barber chairs and cigar shops. And on boxing forums.

Great post. I could see that being a newspaper article.
