Did Sonny Liston have many Amateur Fights?

Did Sonny Liston have many Amateur Fights? any one know his amateur record?

I don't know the total amount but he did make a strong impression during his short amateur career, winning the Golden Gloves and beating Olympic champion Ed Sanders. Liston was a natural talent.

that was the 1953 mid-west national Golden Gloves finals, the Navy would not allow Ed Sanders to turn pro for a year so he remained in the amateur ranks. by all accounts Liston did not look very good beating Sanders.

Liston was a bit crude early on, as evident from his early filmed amateur fight, but the talent was there.

Sanders eventually turned pro, but lost his life in the ring in a tragic accident. A shame since he looked to have the size and power to become a decent fighter.

I'm always amazed when people glorify Liston as a good fighter. He had no defense, his balance was terrible, his whole game revolved around pressure and trying to land one big shot while eating punches with his face.

There is no way there is any available accurate record keeping of Liston's prison boxing.

A remarkably incorrect description of Sonny Liston's style, no doubt the result of watching perhaps a single minute or two of Liston in action against Ali.

He probably would have had a lot of barefisted fights in prison also. I know it isn't the same, but it definitely moulds the toughness and killer instinct a guy like Sonny had.

Also, to who said Liston had no skills, wwatch him properly.

Great power jab, strong as hell, good pressure, good chin, he was a great fighter.

Thanks to both of you for politely correcting that guy
