very tough fight, Patterson was an excellent boxer with a great left-hook and would have been a tough fight for any fighter, i see Frazier applying the pressure from the off and Floyd moving and scoring.. this would be a classic with Frazier scoring a UD15rds
I'm a huge Patterson fan, but I lean to Frazier in this one.
They were both fairly slow starters, Patterson the better technician with better handspeed (possibly even a better, certainly faster left hook). Frazier was the stronger, possibly better conditioned and more durable slugger.
I could see Frazier grinding down Patterson late, but it would not suprise me if Patterson was ahead at the time of stoppage, OR having possibly knocked Frazier down earlier on.

Great fight, great fighters.
I agree Frazier would wear him down(Grinding down Patterson),and the end would not be pretty.I don't see Frazier going to the head at all early in the fight, but working the body with wicked body shots.Patterson's body would be there,if his head would not be.Then Frazier going to the head and body in the middle rounds, wearing him down before stopping Patterson with his suspect chin.
I'm very surprized everybody thinks this would be a close fight, especially you.Frazier had what,20lbs on Patterson? He was bigger, stronger, hit harder, and had better stamina. Also had more heart.
Hi Boxingboy, I suppose its because I'm comparing the prime Patterson that KO'd the likes of Archie Moore, who also looked terrific in the Johannson rematch. That guy was superb!
Its also interesting to consider that had old Floyd Patterson not fought the likes of George Chuvalo, Jerry Quarry twice and Bonavena too (beating Chuvalo & Bonavena on points, the Quarry fights were very close), then perhaps many of us in the history section would be picking him to lose to these rugged punchers too.
But for all that his chin wasn't amazing, knocking the man out wasn't always as easy as Sonny Liston made it look.
But we clearly agree on a Frazier stoppage victory......so I guess that is what counts. I just think that he would do a little better beforehand. Joe Frazier in his prime was only what 204Lbs, not a huge weight difference really, and dont forget Patterson could punch seriously hard. I think Henry Cooper once said Patterson hit him harder than anyone.
