The fight is taking place at Rixos Tersane Istanbul in Turkey.

Who is Albert Batyrgaziev?

Batyrgaziev, a 27 year old from Russia, is the interim WBA beltholder at 130lbs. He’s hoping for a primary world title to go with the Olympic gold he took home in 2021 after triumphing in the featherweight tournament. As a professional, Batyrgaziev is 12-0 (8 KOs), or 14-0 (9 KOs) if you include his two IBA pro bouts, which BoxRec lists separately.

In the past year, Batyrgaziev has scored a ninth-round TKO over the 24-2-1 former title challenger Jono Carroll, stopped the 35-1 Albert Pagara in the fifth round of an IBA pro match, and then won a unanimous decision in a battle with the 18-0 Neri Ariel Cruz Romero. Batyrgaziev was dropped twice in the third round, put Romero on the canvas in the fourth and then was penalized for striking his downed opponent.

The victory over Carroll earned him the secondary WBA belt. That means Batyrgaziev has been in line for a shot at primary titleholder Lamont Roach Jnr since July 2024. Roach, of course, was originally expecting to face lightweight titleholder Gervonta “Tank” Davis late last year. Instead, Roach and Davis fought to a draw this past March and are expected to have a rematch in August, though that date is not yet official.

If Roach wins, will he stick around at 135lbs rather than return to 130? Will Batyrgaziev get his shot at Roach or instead be upgraded if Roach vacates? Of course, all of this is moot if Batyrgaziev doesn’t beat Dickens on Wednesday.

Who is Jazza Dickens?

James “Jazza” Dickens, 35-5 (14 KOs), is a 34 year old from Liverpool, England. Dickens has twice challenged for a world title. He was summarily dispatched in two rounds by Guillermo Rigondeaux at junior featherweight in 2016. After another defeat, Dickens won eight straight – including a majority decision over Leigh Wood in 2020 – and landed a bout with Kid Galahad for the vacant IBF featherweight belt in 2021.

Dickens and Galahad had fought once before, with Galahad winning via 10th-round TKO in 2013. This time, Galahad sent Dickens packing after the 11th. Dickens has gone 5-1 since, notching two victories, losing via 10th-round knockout to the 15-2 Hector Andres Sosa, and then adding three more wins. His most recent outing was in February, when Dickens outpointed the 31-2 Zelfa Barrett.

What other fights are on the undercard of Albert Batyrgaziev vs. Jazza Dickens?

The rest of the show features a mix of boxing, IBA pro bouts, and bare-knuckle fights. The most notable involves junior welterweight Hovhannes Bachkov, who earned bronze in 2021 after losing to Keyshawn Davis. Bachkov, 7-0 (6 KOs), will face gatekeeper Xolisani Ndongeni, 33-6 (19 KOs).
