Comments Thread For: From trading punches to delivering mail: Ishe Smith looks back with contentment

"I tell people this all the time and they think I'm kidding," laughs former 154lbs titlist Ishe Smith. "I practically had a 20-year pro career. I had no injuries really. I've only been cut in a couple fights, cut in the gym. Nothing really major, nothing serious that would hold me out for an extended period of time. But being a mailman, I've experienced more injuries on that job in five years than I ever experienced boxing."

An 11k check cut down to 3600, cut down to under 2k. Criminal.

Young fighters, invest your money. No matter what you’re making out away 25% of it for investment. Get your bachelors degree, start a business with an advisory group, get a personal trainer certification, get your name on products, etc etc. that’s all.

No shame in an honest day's work.

This man over-achieved in the sport. He was not really all that talented but he won a world title and shared the ring with Randall Bailey, Sergio Mora, Danny Jacobs, Cornelius Bundrage, Carlos Molina, Erislandy Lara, Vanes Martirosyan, Julian Williams, Tony Harrison, and Erickson Lubin.

Excellent read. Smith always seemed like a nice guy and his story is very compelling. It's a shame he didn't fight Paul Williams, or even an upcoming Alvarez.

This is the best article I recall ever reading on this site — lots of real world insight. Most boxing fans think the guys they watch on TV are raking it in. The reality is far from that. Ishe is pretty far down the ladder from guys like Mayweather and Canelo, yet he had a taste of success that most fighters can only dream of. It’s sobering to note that after twenty years in the sport, Smith had to take a civil service job to actually prosper. And thank God he did! As a former government employee myself, I’m happy to see that Ishe is enjoying good benefits and working towards a pension. Muhammad Ali once warned against getting into sports, and the fight business in particular. You’ve gotta be a one-in-a-million talent to be a real star. The Canelo/Mayweather haters can never acknowledge how incredibly rare those athletes truly are. In this article, Smith gives us a glimpse to the realities of the sport. Nice job.

Fantastic read! I’m glad he’s doing well. His story should be a movie! Wishing him continued success and blessing.

Proud of Ishe Smith. Wish someone would make a movie over his life, it truly is a remarkable story.

For some reason, I can never un-see the time Ishe Smith was in the ring after a fight, crying and blubbering and said, "I was gonna killll mysellffff eeeeeeeee..."

I don't understand how that can be Floyd's man and Floyd online showing off the new jet he just bought, but yet he got his man running around delivering mail. Damn, Floyd could easily help set Ishe up with a little business or something. Floyd is cold as a polar bear's ay-nuss
