If nothing was wrong with Spence going into the fight, Spence has a great engine and consistent with a solid base/foudation skillwise. He does some subtle things in there that work for him. I think the problem is that he doesn't seem like he has dynamic to his game. Crawford can switch up (not just talking about stance), but in terms of speed, making adjustments, slowing down when needed, picking up the pace when needed, switching up punch styles when needed, etc. Spence seems just he just stays consistent and even ramps up which is something a lot of opponents can't handle. However, Crawford just had to switch up while Spence stays.

Spence is like a muscle car going a steady 95 MPH making wide, but consistent turns, while Crawford is like a foreign sports car hitting 105 MPH on straight-aways, but quickly able to drop to 30-40MPH for turns, then excel back to 80-90 on a dime, drifting when needed, spin out, drive in reverse and spin back straight and 0-60 in 2 seconds, etc.

i keep seeing post like "there was no back up plan"... if your opponent is better than you, what back up plan is gonna help you??? what did ya want spence to do? hit crawford with a baseball bat?? all this "back up plan" is for the birds.. if your opponent is just better than you, there is no amount of "back up plan" that is gonna help you. it's easier said than done when you are sitting on your couch watching a fight on TV.. it's easy to say spence should have done this or that... he couldnt because crawford controlled how the fight will be fought!!!

By back up plan perhaps people allude to the fact James gave no real constructive feedback in between rounds. When spence needed advice it wasn't there for him
Would it have made any difference, likely not but as a trainer your job is to navigate your fighter through the fights and give instructions to enforce adjustments when needed. He did none of this. Outclassed and outcoached

well, what was he supposed to tell spence? he gave spence's instructions, crawford was just the better fighter. mofos always blaming the trainer after a loss. no amount of instructions was gonna change how the fight play out.

What instructions exactly did he give him? He simply reinforced what was already not working. Hence the no plan b accusations. Sure crawford is simply a better fighter all around the board but tell me what exactly did James tell spence to change up during rounds? Be specific

It is the pound for pound no1 saying this so I am sure there is value.

But honestly I've never been convinced outside of motivation coaches can change much once it begins in that cauldron of an atmosphere with all that adrenaline flowing.

In reality, Spence was probably tight at that weight. Got hurt regularly from round 3 on and was completely and utterly f.ucked from that point on and a knock out waiting to happen.

Spence is a momentum fighter, like a snowball rolling down a hill.
He doesn't really fight off his back foot.
Nobody has really put him off that stride like Bud did,.
In the Leonard Hearns fight Tommy got hurt and changed up he mostly out boxed the boxer till Ray caught him later.

It's simple, Crawford was the better man that night, didn't matter who was in Spence's corner, there's only so much a coach can do.

My only criticism of James is letting the fight drag on too long, the fight could of been stopped in the 5 or 6 round.

It all depends what the coach is working with? Spence Junior was too weight drained at the weight 'Both fighters were weight drained, but Spence Junior was the more negatively effected'.

Even still skill for skill Crawford just fought a better fight, and seemed to be 2 moves ahead of Spence Junior.

Note: In my opinion a boxing coaches main bulk of work, is produced in training camp 'Not on fight night'. Still the work on fight night is important, but the tactics and game plans should all already be in place to counter act all the situations in a fight etc.
